In the urban design course, we were asked to focus on Kolej Area which is in the city center. (urban context) How to enhance its city life; nature-city relations, infrastructure, security, pedestrianization and so forth. As group, we decided to enhance community life by creating reachable open public spaces. We also had the idea to revealing İncesu Stream, which will work as a pedestrian spine connecting open public spaces such as Kurtuluş Park and İncesu Park. The spine, also had spatial functional characteristics embedded in it, in order to enrich the experience of the everyday users.

As the aim of the Urban Design course we were taken this semester, we were given a rather larger site containing also the site of ARCH301. We were supposed to enhance the community by designing the urban character of the site. But first, as the studio we were supposed to do a very detailed analysis of the site. So, each group has a subject to focus and analyse.

We were given to examine and discover the geomorphology and hydromorphology of the site; the geomorphology means the height of the site; the slope of the land. So we were looking for valley conditions or hilltop conditions. Our site used to have Incesu stream, then it was moved under the road which changed lots of the characteristics of the site. It creates heat islands. (because the cold provided by the stream now is gone) Then we also discover the movement of the sun, and realized that the density of the buildings creates shadows on each others’ facade.

After analyzing the given site and discovering its geomorphologic qualities, we determined some problems throughout the site. There is formation of heat islands due to obscuration of Incesu stream which affects the temperature of the city. It causes a rise in the heat which is also generated by the dense construction and housing. The air is trapped within the city; it cannot be refreshed. The perpendicular positioning of the buildings against the predominant wind direction, which is north east for the city center, prevents the flow of wind corridors and air circulation within the city. Especially in the winter, the air pollution reaches its high levels and have an impact on the urban area. Additionally, the city formation is based on the interrelation between the buildings, which is also a problematic issue for our site. The buildings either not designed and positioned to get direct sunlight or they create shadow to the adjacent structures without taking into consideration the advantages of topography that can be adjusted to prevent those situations.
