Final jury

The semester is coming to an end and now it is time to have final juries. My project has evolved and changed a lot throughout the semester.

The city bazaar is now the interpretation of “spaces of exchange” as exchange of information, the literal exchange as shopping and the production of this exchange. The interpretation of voids as spaces of exchange in Kemeraltı led me to this point of providing a structure that enhances social community life through exchange of information. The structure is aiming at combining two spinal voids (one is the arc of Kemeraltı and the other is coastline) that’s why it has its own directional void on the inside. The void is trapped in the structural grid and each floor is divided and formed according to their function and publicity. The ground floor is the most accessible one with the function of literal exchange, so the masses are fragmented and these are mostly shops, antiquarians, book repair services, bookstores and etc. Then the upper floor is basically containing more interactive office spaces for press and printing offices all around the site which is about collaboration production of information. Coming to the next floor, it is basically about more self production and spreading these information, so the spaces are more about studios, large spaces which provides self- production of a book. The utmost floor is the accommodation function which is providing a temporary shelter for the members who work here as a writer, translator, office member or a worker on the process of book which is situated as a space embedded to the ground.

The second prejury took place with different evaluations, approaches and representations. My project is about one structure which is consisting of layers of different functions, which are positioned according to their level of privacy. Then, the relation of those functional solids and voids forms the structure.

This semester is aiming at developing a project of city bazaar which is combined of spaces of exchange. Well, here space of exchange can be interpreted as very differently. It can be focusing on the consumption and shopping, or it can also be interpreted as exchange of information coming from social interactions of people. Social interaction of people, according to my observations, is taking place in urban voids. Voids, as they are located mostly in front of mosques; since they are creating a public gathering space, are rich spaces with interaction. Then, maidans as Clock Tower Square and the streets where there are human flow are also acting as dynamic voids which are orienting people.

The two spines where there is a major human flow could be connected by creating a link between those roads. And this road is coming across our site; so, the site can be interpreted as a node; a rich void to have social interaction. However, there are also some other problematic situation in Konak district, which can be resolved by combining my idea of interactive spaces. The modern era is conflicting with small authentic shops like the ones in Kemeraltı and it causes a decline in the area’s commercial activities. So, while voids are providing space of exchange of knowledge, the solids can be more about commerce and how these commercial activities will be integrated with those rich voids.

site model

As the studio, we made a site model of Konak, İzmir, containing our site, coastline and the dense old bazaar; Kemeraltı.FullSizeRender

Scale Study

To create an architectural scenario, we can investigate different scalings of some objects and their spatial quality to find out more about the potentials of bazaar and spaces. As a starting point, we were given counter as an essential element of the bazaar; we multiply it or resize it to obtain different characteristics. (functions, human experience, spatial quality etc.)

The documentation of site is concerning the density of people throughout the day, the activity patterns, the human interactions on specific areas, color range of context, mental mapping and so forth. We tried to analyze the site and its surroundings, the old and new parts of Konak and landmarks.

This semester we are going to design city bazaar, and to examine the richness of bazaar, human activities and interactions we went to Izmir, Kemeraltı which is suitable to old city context of “space of exchange”.

Case Study // Incubation Center, Library and Alternative Office spaces

As an assigned to be researched, we were given to analyze libraries and alternative office spaces throughout the history. The timelines show us how they evolved technologically and spatially. Then we also focused on the contemporary examples and how these terms are now understood and applied. There is also the emergence of Incubation centers which is a rather new concept. The spaces are now more flexible and transparent; allowing the workers to easily interact with each other.
