lexicon study: Delf Library

lexiconstudyAs the structure course, we were asked to analyze Delft Library and its qualifications: spatial, general design ideas, spatial and how human experienced the building. Then, we produce some creative but also defining words to explain the building. We produce a hard copy of this designed lexicon, also.

site model

As the studio, we made a site model of Konak, İzmir, containing our site, coastline and the dense old bazaar; Kemeraltı.FullSizeRender

Scale Study

To create an architectural scenario, we can investigate different scalings of some objects and their spatial quality to find out more about the potentials of bazaar and spaces. As a starting point, we were given counter as an essential element of the bazaar; we multiply it or resize it to obtain different characteristics. (functions, human experience, spatial quality etc.)

The documentation of site is concerning the density of people throughout the day, the activity patterns, the human interactions on specific areas, color range of context, mental mapping and so forth. We tried to analyze the site and its surroundings, the old and new parts of Konak and landmarks.

This semester we are going to design city bazaar, and to examine the richness of bazaar, human activities and interactions we went to Izmir, Kemeraltı which is suitable to old city context of “space of exchange”.

Case Study // Winery Gantenbein

The case study aims at exploring a building concerning its structural quality, how it is having a role in design; the benefits of structural elements in larger context. As a group, we choose Winery Gantenbein and focused on its façade application.

Apart from the traditional brick construction, the wall is constructed by computer programming, having parameter design.(Brick laying machine) Each brick is specifically placed with determined angle to have controlled light quality and air permeability. The façade appears as a solidified dynamic form, in whose three-dimensional depth the viewer’s eye is invited to wander. In the interior, the daylight that penetrates creates a mild, yet luminous atmosphere.

Case Study // Incubation Center, Library and Alternative Office spaces

As an assigned to be researched, we were given to analyze libraries and alternative office spaces throughout the history. The timelines show us how they evolved technologically and spatially. Then we also focused on the contemporary examples and how these terms are now understood and applied. There is also the emergence of Incubation centers which is a rather new concept. The spaces are now more flexible and transparent; allowing the workers to easily interact with each other.
