The Field

The analysis that we had through examining the field of Kayaköy was first put in a diagram. These were subjective interpretations of the field and also the detailed analysis. Then we were given this new assignment which is about stretching lines into a frame according to diagram. We distinguished some important parts according to our interpretations of diagram and called them “cores”. In my design these were the basic areas which can show more information than other parts by overlap, intersection and so forth. Long story short, my diagram has two cores and there two parts also differentiate from each other. One has more fragmented part and the other part is the less fragmented variation of it. So, here is my field!

Then, there is a second step which is about putting “depth quailty” into this 2D frame work. We need to differentiate our fields in order to have a 3D grid on a 3D surface. I personally think that putting emphasis onto intersection parts and core will make them look more legible and reflect their importance.

We learnt a new technique to draw the shadows of 3D objects on a 2D paper. It is all about the light source and its relation with the placed object.

Photo Collage of Kayaköy

After an amazing trip to Kayaköy of course we had to have some homewooorkkks!! 😀 In order to be a master of Photoshop we have use it over and over again until we discover all the properties of it. This collage assignment made me learn more about working with a huge amount of layers, level of transparency of layers and colors. We were asked to create a landscape photo collage with overlapping layers and obtaining new characteristics in these emerged layers. In my work, I determined a sub-theme which is continuity. By intersecting the same kind of parts (walls with walls or sky with sky) I tried to achieve a sense of wholeness.

A Trip To Kayaköy

“Kayaköy, anciently known as Lebessos and Lebessus (Ancient Greek: Λεβέσσος) and later as Livissi (Greek: Λειβίσσι) is a village 8 km south of Fethiye in southwestern Turkey. In ancient times it was a city of Lycia, Later, Anatolian Greeks lived there until approximately 1922. The ghost town, now preserved as a museum village, consists of hundreds of rundown but still mostly standing Greek-style houses and churches which cover a small mountainside and serve as a stopping place for tourists visiting Fethiye and nearby Ölüdeniz.

Its population in 1900 was about 2,000, almost all Greek Christians; however, it is now empty except for tour groups and roadside vendors selling handmade goods. However, there is a selection of houses which have been restored, and are currently occupied.”

We had this amazing little trip on a rainy weekend with “TEDU ARCHITECTURE” first and second year students and our teachers. As cited above, this abondoned village is stuated near sea but on a mountain. We had to walk and in some occasions, climb. But the view on the top worths all the effort to get there. The clean fresh air and all the nature really amazed me. Despite the bad weather and the difficult roads, I tried to explore as much as I could. We found a lot of sea shells in Kayaköy and that really make me smile!

 Above all the things, we were taken there to have a study. We were given a simple map of Kayaköy and some papers. We observed the field according to different factors which also affect the experience of space: light, enclosure, shadow, visibility, horizon, form, continuity, texture, color and so forth. For example, the positioning of houses varies according to the slope of the field. This also affects the density of houses, the flora, the temperature etc. Our duty is to discover these factors and their relations to each other. We were asked to create a multi-layered map according to our observations and interpretations.

The instance

The Instance is basically a 3D representation of the diagram interpretations of Alice. The analyses of diverse spatial relations tried to be expressed in a new medium. We were given some operations which can be applied to paper: bending, folding and cutting. All these operations gave different characteristics to spaces and made them richer. So, we have to set up some set of rules which will organise the whole model.

In my instance model I especially focus on how to interrelate the parts which have the same characteristics. According to my interpretations, the variations of spaces will be rearranged in model in order to create transition along spaces.

We develop Photoshop Skills with the light of different assignments which help us discover new qualities of editing. Photoshop skills are important in a lot of manner in architecture since it is a medium to represent design ideas expressively.

In this assignment, we were asked to obtain a whole composition while coloring a black and white picture. We were supposed to have some principles and due to some spatial relations, we had to apply these principles. I personally focus on depth quality, light and shadow qualities and alignments of given structures. My work has a hue of one color due to its concept of being a “whole”. Same hues represent same qualities while overlapping parts had emerged some new qualities and gave the digital photo a vide variety of relations.

Bilkent symphony Orchestra: A little piece of music

The Art of piece of written music is one miraculous thing which is for “ARTY’s; the ones who appreciates the true art itself.” Classical music has always been a source of spiritual energy for me due to its harmony of notes and timbre. The special occasion to see a symphony orchestra while rehearsing is such a lovely experience. It is just like the performance itself but additionally, it is quite interesting to observe the effort of musicians playing over and over and just to have the right note in a unified way. Orchestra is surprisingly similar to a complex of design; each element has its own role but they have to function together in a proper, harmonious way.

We have been learning some techniques of drawings since the beginning of our architecture adventure. Here comes a new one: SECTIONING! Well, it is a very useful technique in case you want to give extra information about the inner things of a model, building, structure and so forth. We draw separately some parts of a building which are divided according to the amount of information they can express.

The object that we were asked to draw wasn’t the most difficult model yet, it is a little hard for me to imagine the interior space of it without cutting it through since this is the first time I started to think that I wasn’t used to. Fortunately, me and all my friends managed this task as usual. 🙂

This is the first assignment of the second semester given to us the minute we walk in the studio. Architects don’t waste time! 😀 Actually, this is rather an activity than an assignment because we were asked to read “Alice in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking Glass” by Lewis Caroll.

After reading the full text of one my my favorite childhood story, we were supposed to draw a diagram according to the some scenes we had chosen. We interpreted the these scenes according to some principles and according to experience of space. Our interptations created a rich context in the diagram and we also discovered new qualities of spaces while forming diagrams.

My diagram has analysed the scenes according to the experience of time and how the interrelations between the characters in the book affect the same experiences.
